6 Ways that a tablet computer changes lives

Sometimes it’s hard to express all of the implications of a gift. Like the fifteen tablet computers that recently arrived at Good Work Foundation’s Madlala Digital Learning Centre. I am going to try anyway.

  • Each tablet is loaded with education-based apps: Scrabble, Word-Search, Mathematics literacy. This is the first time that our students have played digital games – all in English – and they are enraptured
  • Each app has levels and scores, and many are multi-player. Our students are learning English and mathematics literacy – and the best part is that they’re becoming competitive. Who is going to get the highest score?
  • Many students are shy. In class, they don’t volunteer answers. The apps allow these students to learn free of judgment. For the first time, they have an outlet and can learn in their own style and time
  • Many of the students have never used tablets or apps before – in playing the “games” they learn to operate the hardware. They learn about “apps”, about “the cloud” and about digital design
  • The apps expose our students to the world. From the meaning of “samurai” to where on Earth the Eiffel Tower is, our students in rural South Africa are not only becoming literate in digital and English, they are learning about the world
  • One student is 54 years old. He sees the value in learning English using the apps. He has two jobs, but he’s making the time to “get digital”

So to M-Net Cares, an organisation that made it possible for us to create an “Open Learning Academy” complete with fully-licensed tablets at Madlala Digital Learning Centre, your gift is huge. As an organisation, we are immensely grateful. To see our students plugging into the world gives us huge joy, and to think that their future might be different thanks to the gifts of others is extremely humbling.

From all of us, thank you.
