GWF’s Hospitality Facilitator, Nikiwe Mabanga Explains What Hospitality Is All About

Nikiwe Mabanga has been a hospitality facilitator at Good Work Foundation’s (GWF) Hazyview Digital Learning Campus (HDLC) for almost two years. Nikiwe’s job is to ensure that adult students get world-class education in various hospitality careers, to prepare them with knowledge on how to provide guests with ‘top-notch’ service.

“Hospitality is all about providing guests with a pleasant experience, so here at the HDLC we expose our students to various hospitality careers,” said Nikiwe.

Initially the ‘Food and Beverage’ course was compulsory for all Absa Bridging Academy students, but not all students were interested in this subject, so GWF realized that bringing in even more courses to cater for all students was of utmost importance, so that each student could learn what he or she wants.

The hospitality programme now offers 12 courses, namely:

  • Bar
  • Coffee
  • Food and Beverages
  • Food Safety
  • Front Office
  • Guiding
  • Housekeeping
  • Field Guides Association of South Africa (FGASA)
  • Luxury Hospitality Standards
  • Service 1
  • The World Masterclass of Whisky
  • Wine 1

Most of HDLC’s graduates have benefitted and some still continue doing so, from these courses as we currently have 12 students in total who have been sent to the South African College for Tourism at Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape to further train in culinary and hospitality services.

“I truly marvel at how enthusiastic and committed the students are. It is of the utmost importance here at the HDLC that we help students identify where their abilities are, career-wise, and then we send them to institutions that will help them. What’s also interesting is that 20% of our students are working in various hospitality establishments in the local area,” said Nikiwe.

This is proof that the work of Nikiwe and GWF is contributing to the local economy by providing well-trained, hard-working employees for the tourist industry.
