Hazyview’s Baristas “Bean There, Done That”

On Wednesday 28 January, 2015, the Hospitality Academy’s baristas-in-training enjoyed a day out at Sabie Valley Coffee, an opportunity to supplement some of their theory training (courtesy of vida e caffè certified baristas, Njabulo Mashele and Teaman Manzini).

Tim Buckland, owner and manager of Sabie Valley Coffee, dedicated some time to teach the eleven students about how coffee is produced: from the types of seeds that are sown to the final product that goes to the store shelf.

The new barista training course at Good Work Foundation is a good example of “blended learning”: students do the majority of their theory training online (assessments and video tuition), but this is complemented with lectures, practical experience at the espresso bar and field trips.

When asked about the most interesting thing he learnt at Sabie Valley Coffee, one student said: “Can you believe that, after water, coffee is the most consumed liquid in the world.”

Many of you will say, “yes, we can believe it!”
