Mercyful Mathebula

Mercyful is Hazyview Digital Learning Academy’s “queen of lobster” or formally, the Hospitality Academy Programme Facilitator.

In an area (and province) where Uncle Sam is tourism, Mercyful is at the helm of an important ship. She is tasked with guiding students through our internationally accredited hospitality course which we deliver via “Lobster Ink”, an online hospitality training platform.

The content is delivered in a structured, curriculum-based format, allowing learners to progress systematically, and the majority of tests are written and marked online.

Mercyful – originally from Acornhoek in Mpumalanga – completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies in 2008. While visiting her aunt at Londolozi in 2012, Mercyful met Gogo Mo – Course Coordinator at Londolozi Digital Learning Centre.

At the time Kate was looking for Hazyview Digital Learning Centre’s first front desk operator. Mercyful says: “Kate was looking for the ‘welcome’ face of Hazyview’s new digital centre and told me that she thought I’d be perfect. I wanted to be part of the Good Work Foundation vision and the rest is history!”

After working at reception welcoming guests and students until December 2012, in January 2013 Mercyful moved to her current position.

Mercyful is studying extra modules in career guidance and counselling via UNISA. Her motivation is – unsurprisingly – the number of teens who hit a brick wall after they have matriculated from high school.

“I want to help match personalities to career options” says Mercyful. “If more young people had a dream and a career goal, then surely that would motivate better high school results. The harsh reality is that there is no time to be complacent. The more direction a young person has, the better.”

My Favourite quote

We are born, we live and we die. We cannot do anything about being born or dying but we can do a lot about how we live.

My role model

Definitely Gogo Mo. Gogo is someone who is willing to bring change to people’s lives. She does her best to make a small impact every day. She strives to make people realise that education is key.

My job

Not only do I teach, but I learn as well. With every day that passes my hospitality knowledge increases and I can share that passion with our learners.

My hobbies

My first love is reading. Outside of work I’m an introvert so if I can choose to be curled up alone with a good book, then that’s first prize.

My favourite book

Rock Star and Lucky by Jackie Collins. I love this lady! They say “she’ll keep you up all night” and it’s true.
