Conservationist from Rural Nyongane: Sibusiso Mnisi

For many young South Africans, realising dreams costs thousands of rands they haven’t got. This is the case with Sibusiso Mnisi, a young man from dusty rural Nyongane, just outside Hazyview. He attended  both primary and high school in the local government schools of Nyongane.

In September 2012 Sibusiso was working at the Hossana church as a care giver, that is when he found out about Hazyview Digital Learning Centre (HDLC), where he enrolled under the Absa-sponsored Bridging Academy programme in 2014. While studying, Sibusiso also volunteered at the centre as an English Facilitator.

Sibusiso graduated with outstanding results; found passion in animal and nature conservation studies, and then started working in the Conservation Academy where he taught Open Learning Academy kids about the importance of keeping both our land and animals safe.

“I feel great and honored to work at Good Work Foundation (GWF) because this place has improved my life, my English and communication skills.”- said Sibusiso.

Sibusiso believes in changing communities to a better place for young people by teaching them about nature conservation. “It is important to educate children about protecting their environment because as human beings we are connected with nature”- said Sibusiso.

For someone whose dream was always to become a teacher, Sibusiso is enjoying just that with both the adult and young children he teaches at the campus daily.

In the next  five years Sibusiso sees himself as a qualified environmentalist. He is currently studying to obtain a diploma in Nature Conservation.“I want to see myself as an environmental educator and a qualified one for that matter,”said Sibusiso.

In his spare time, he likes to play soccer and reading  motivational and inspirational books. His favorite is from Sibusiso Vilane- To the top from nowhere , a book that has taught him that anything is possible no matter who you are or where you are from.

Sibusiso is a motivated young man who wants only the best for his students and himself, he truly is a selfless person who motivates you to want to do better.

Sibusiso’s dream was to be a qualified teacher. Even though he did not go to school he feels like his dream has come true because everyday he teaches young rural learners about the importance of nature conservation.
