Sibusiso Vilane’s 7 Keys to Success

“There were times when I thought that we’d run out of food.”

Stuck in a tent for 10 days as a powerful storm raged on outside, Sibusiso Vilane, and his Team Extreme partner, Alex Harris, thought they were going to run out of food before reaching the South Pole.

Surviving on the bare minimum to see themselves through the storm.

They were on a mission to become the first South Africans to walk to the South Pole completely unassisted.

Pulling 140kg of gear (including tent and food) for more than 1000km over 60 days, it’s safe to say that this was an extreme challenge.

Sibu and Alex made it to the South Pole on 17 January 2008, and since then Sibu has also trekked to the North Pole, which means he has completed the “three poles challenge” (North Pole, South Pole and Everest).

Sibu was under Hazyview’s Digital Tree of Knowledge recently, talking to three packed crowds about his “icy” adventure.

As you can imagine, we had some interesting questions, like, “did you and Alex fight?”, “did you ever think you might die?” and one of our favourites, “in temperatures so cold, how did you go to the loo?”

Anyone have any questions? Wow Summerhill - you're an inquisitive lot!

Anyone have any questions? I guess that answers that question…

Perhaps the most important part of Sibu’s talk though, was when he shared what he thought were the seven keys to success:

  • Planning meticulously
  • Setting daily objectives
  • Perseverance
  • Determination
  • Committing to hard work
  • Will to succeed in difficult conditions
  • Winning team

Do you agree with Sibu’s seven keys to success? What would you add? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
