The Leanna Knopik Cup: The Student with the Biggest Heart!

I am very privileged to be the one today to stand and present this very special award: The All Heart Fund’s Leanna Knopik Cup. This is an award that is presented by Good Work Foundation (GWF) to the student, learner or team member who has, over the year or years with us, demonstrated the biggest Heart.

Before I tell you about the winner this year I would like to just tell you about why we have this award.

Leanna Knopik was a young girl who grew up on the other side of the world – in the USA.  She had an exceptionally big heart and had a dream to make a difference to the lives of rural African children. She had visited Africa with her family and friends and was inspired to make a difference. Leanna’s life ended far too soon and it is in honour of her dream to make a difference for others that we have as a GWF partner the All Heart Fund. And it is in honour of Leanna, her memory, her family and what they all stand for that we give this award.

This year we are very happy to award the Leanna Knopik Cup to a young man who we have known since 2012 when he first arrived at Madlala High School. He is someone who is very aware of the people around him and is motivated to help where he can. He was a member of TADA – Teenagers against Drug Abuse. He was a member of the V-Girls movement and he was not shy about it because he was a boy, rather he understood the importance of its mission.

In another connection to Leanna he was one of the artists whose painting travelled to the USA to be auctioned to raise funds for the All Heart Fund at the very first Safari Sarasota.

We have journeyed a long way with this young man: Shine Day, workshops, and the Mpumalanga Arts Festival in Nelspruit. And a highlight for me was him and his friends slam poetry presentation at the launch of Justicia Digital Learning Campus earlier this year.

This young man is reliable, committed, talented, creative and most importantly, shows a Big Heart. We look forward to many years of connection still ahead and so it is my honour to present the 2016 Leanna Knopik Cup to Lusanda Mawelele.
