The Month in Pictures #1

Last year we introduced our readers to the “month in pictures”. Thanks to the great comments and feedback, we have decided to formalise this monthly contribution. This will be a compilation of the month’s best photos from Good Work Foundation, and this week we begin with the boy in the purple bow-tie.

The Boy in the Purple Bow-Tie

Ifalethu Primary School is the latest school to join forces with Good Work Foundation. Scheduled into their students’ timetables are weekly digital, maths and English literacy classes at Hazyview Digital Learning Centre (HDLC). We engage each student using cloud-based learning techniques, forward-thinking educational “apps”, online course material, high-speed internet access and inspired teachers.

On Ifalethu’s second day at Hazyview Digital Learning Centre, Ryan took some photos of a young student who was experiencing his first ever lesson on a tablet computer. The young student left before we could get his full name, and so now he is known as “The Boy in the Purple Bow-Tie”. What a character!

“Oh man! I knew that answer”

It is always such a pleasure seeing kids in the Open Learning Centre for this first time. The gentle murmur of small groups working on problem-solving together, and the entire space “jingling” as the tablets respond to CORRECT answers. The look of concentration on almost all of the little faces is incredible, and very special:

Best Digital Friends Forever

We have heard of “BFF” or “Best Friends Forever” and so, in the name of all that is connected and online, we have invented “BDFF” or “Best Digital Friends Forever”. We managed to get some incredible BDFF’s of our adult learners this month. Fresh from a holiday, our ABSA sponsored learners were ready to tuck into the next module, and many of them wrote an exam today (good luck guys!).

The A+ Computing class have been working incredibly hard. As a group they are encouraging each other, creating smaller study groups, and dedicating many hours to studying for their exam. Well done team, we're proud!

And let’s not forget the team!

Lastly, this month we were able to get some great team pictures. One of our favourites is of the HDLC team in their new PINK Digital Tree of Knowledge t-shirts. We’re painting the barn pink.

Watch out Hazyview – “Pink” is the new “Khaki”!
