Under the Tree: Rory O’Flaherty

Rory O’Flaherty – a teacher at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for girls – recently spent a week at Hazyview Digital Learning Centre, presenting a number of entrepreneurship seminars.

“I was lucky enough to be at the opening of the Hazyview Digital Learning Centre in 2012” says Rory, “and I knew that I wanted to contribute and engage with these young, ambitious rural learners. I had a week off recently and suggested to Kate that we run a number of entrepreneurship workshops. Sometimes, in spite of the fact that a young person is qualified, it’s difficult to get a job, so I want to open young people’s minds to the possibility of creating their own income.”

In his workshop, Rory spoke about the basics of starting a business, and referenced some of the world’s most well-known business tycoons, from Bill Gates and Richard Branson to Mark Zuckerberg.

But Rory also mentioned some examples that are closer to home. Many readers will know of Mark Shuttleworth, but a lesser known “home-grown” example is Sifiso Dlamini, a young entrepreneur from Soweto who is slowly growing a very creative shoe empire. Have a look at a recent video made about Sifiso below:

“There are three pieces of advice that I would give to any aspiring entrepreneur” says Rory. “First, persevere. Many entrepreneurs fail several times before they succeed, and it’s the ability to get up and try again that sets apart the very best entrepreneurs. Second, be optimistic. Curves balls come on a daily basis from all directions. Keep your head up and your eye on the goal. Third, follow your passion. Open a business that is in line with your interests and enjoy it.”
