Vacancy: Bridging Academy Coordinator – Mpumalanga, South Africa

Good Work Foundation (GWF) seeks a committed Bridging Academy Coordinator to ensure the successful operation of the Bridging Academy programme at our satellite digital learning campus in Huntington.

About Good Work Foundation

GWF launches hubs of learning or “digital learning campuses” in the heart of rural African communities that support and enhance state education. Digital learning campuses are single points of entry to information and learning that maximise access for underprivileged communities.

The prototype, established in 2012, is Hazyview Digital Learning Campus located close to the border of the Greater Kruger National Park. Since opening, more than 1000 adults have graduated with internationally recognised qualifications in ICT literacy and eight elementary schools send a combined 4000 learners to the campus for digital literacy tuition, as well as supplementary English, mathematics and conservation tuition, presented on digital devices.

Based on the success of the Hazyview Digital Learning Campus prototype, GWF has launched two satellite campuses in rural Mpumalanga.

Identifying the challenges of learning in rural communities, GWF implements two major programmes at its digital learning campuses:

  • The Bridging Academy creates an access bridge between school and work or further education training, preparing rural school leavers for life in modern business environments. This is a one year accredited programme
  • The Open Learning Academy partners with rural primary schools, allowing them to outsource digital, English and mathematics literacy to the digital learning campus. This is a continuous programme that supports rural learners from Grade 4 to Grade 8

  • Responsible for managing the Bridging Academy facilitators
  • Responsible for the successful implementation of the NEW 2017 Bridging Academy, including:
    • Student attendance, interaction, engagement and discipline
    • Coordination and integration of Bridging Academy facilitators and modules
    • Communication to and coordination of all Bridging Academy students
    • Continual monitoring of progress of Bridging Academy students
    • Support on recruitment of Bridging Academy students
    • To work with the Head of Programmes and Head of Campus in the development of the Bridging Academy programme
  • Responsible for ensuring a shift in culture away from an ICDL-dominating learning year, to a “Languages of Access” learning year
  • Responsible for closely monitoring student performance as we implement the NEW 2017 Bridging Academy
  • Responsible for liaising regularly with the Development Team, supporting fundraising and storytelling
  • Research and organise supplementary motivational speakers and programmes

  • 1 – 2 years’ experience working as a Bridging Academy facilitator or equivalent adult learning course
  • Excellent English proficiency and solid communication skills (both spoken and written)
  • Experience working as part of a team of facilitators/educators
  • Experience working with adult students who are not English first language speakers
  • Should be able to demonstrate evidence of strong leadership and teamwork abilities
  • An understanding of the challenges facing school-leavers and second-chance learners in the rural South African context
  • A desire to be part of a new and growing team

GWF offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with qualifications and experience.
