Video: Building for Madiba

The morning after Tata Madiba passed away, 38 volunteers from six different high schools arrived in the Free State town of Philippolis for a planned week of community service.

Philippolis is located in one of South Africa’s so-called “poverty pockets’, and many first-time volunteers experience culture shock.

But Philippolis is a small town that is full of personality, smiles, laughter and community. The spirit here is contagious, and our volunteers left “Phili” with a very different impression from the one they had established in the hours after their arrival. Over the course of the week, the town had changed, but so had they.
