Why Busi Ngomane is an International ‘Woman in Tech’ Hero

As a baby, Busi Ngomane was part of a tragic and brutal accident that affected her life physically and emotionally. After a long recovery without any family, Busi grew up in an orphanage in Johannesburg and endured good times (and bad), and many others would have given up. Not Busi. As a young woman barely out of school, Busi made her way to Shabalala Trust, Hazyview in Mpumalanga in 2012, in a search for her extended maternal family as part of a television program called Khumbulekhaya.

It was here that Busi bumped into the pink walls of Good Work Foundation (GWF) and enrolled for the International Computer Driving License (ICDL), completing on record time under a bursary provided by South Africa’s Absa Bank. Today Busi is a proud #womanintech and works for the Mpumalanga Department of Education.

GWF Blogger, Accolade Ubisi, chats to Busi about who she is, and what her studies at GWF have enabled.

Who is Busi?

I am a young woman who is determined to become successful no matter what. I love people, music and sports. I am also an aspiring lawyer, but I have been taken on a different journey for the time being. Nonetheless, I remain grateful and proud of what I have achieved so far.

What is your story?

I was introduced to Pastor Solly, of Hosanna Church, who told me about the computer courses offered at Good Work Foundation’s (GWF) Hazyview Digital Learning Campus (HDLC). I took his advice and registered at the campus and finished my ICDL and advances Microsoft PowerPoint and Word. These qualifications helped me get a job as an Administration Clerk with the Mpumalanga Department of Education (MDE) in the Mkhuhlu circuit. I love my job and feel blessed to have been the chosen candidate from the thousands of other applicants.

I am on a three year contract with MDE which started in July 2015. I am also still studying; I want to finish my Microsoft Excel advanced by the end of this year. I am enjoying this “thing” called technology and the way it simplifies things for us.

What does your job entail?

I collect and capture data from government schools that are located on a rural school district in South Africa, close to the Kruger National Park. We collect all information regarding the schools, such as the number of students and teachers per school, the number of classes and the space on which the school sits. All this information will assist in drawing up a sound budget for the schools in terms of books, feeding scheme funds, etc.

The system makes it simple for the government to see where there is a shortage of teachers and overcrowding of children in one class.

I’m so proud to be a rural woman who has the same access as the person who grew up more privileged than I did. My accomplishments have proven that technology truly has no boundaries and it sees no colour or gender, it is friendly towards anyone who chooses to use it properly.

Where to from here?

For now my focus is growing and developing the current role I have with MDE as well as finishing my Microsoft Word advanced module. After my contract, I will see where destiny takes me, but it will probably be towards something in the technology sector, as that’s where my heart is at the moment. GWF is also like my second homeso I will keep my ears and eyes open on any new developments at the campus that I can register for and add on to my qualifications: one can never be too educated!

Busi will without a doubt make so many successes in life wiht the ambition and willingness to learn that she has. She is also hoping to "grow and develop with MDE" so she can have practical experience of working with computers.
