Why Hlengiwe Nkuna is Bringing Art Back Home to Rural Mpumalanga

Remember her? This young woman first caught Good Work Foundation’s attention when she sang world renowned artist John Legend’s song so beautifully on a video we shared on our Facebook page when she was doing her final year of high school at Madlala High School. At the time, some of us were so sure that she would one day venture into the world of performing arts.

Hlengiwe left us and herself a bit confused when she found herself in a Mathematics and Physics classroom for three years, studying subjects that have little to do with her passion, but at many rural schools that lack resources it is hard to find teachers who specialise in “alternative” subjects. The prospect of there being an art or drama teacher at the school is small despite the huge amount of talent.

Hlengiwe was spotted by Justicia Digital Learning Campus Head, Linky Nkuna, who never misses an opportunity to help young talented youth from her village and beyond. Linky and Hlengiwe started getting to know each other and from time to time Hlengiwe would go into learning centre (then called Madlala Digital Learning Centre) to use the computers to research the arts online and she fell more and more in love with fine art.

Hlengiwe is now doing her final year of Fine Art, something she loves wholeheartedly. This young woman wants to do a post graduate certificate in education after this, which will allow her to become an art teacher.

“I never had an art teacher even though my whole life was about art, from performing, drawing and painting. I am going to change that as soon as I become qualified, I will work at one of the rural schools back home, giving my people back home an opportunity I never had,” said Hlengiwe.

When it was time to paint our collaboration circle at the new Huntington Digital Learning Campus, there was one person we were going to call: Hlengiwe.

In a month where we are inspired by Madiba, we know that this is the kind of young women that would make Madiba proud. Thank you Hlengiwe.
