Will You Dare to Be a Woman (Rural) Entrepreneur?

Often when stories about successful businesses started from nothing by nobodies are told, it’s a man who managed to do it against all odds. This time, we are inspired by a group of women who went against the flow to shape their destinies.

A group of women have documented their experiences of being women in alpha-male dominated workplaces in a documentary called Go Against the Flow. The women speak about their own challenges and what kept them going against all odds so that today they are successful entrepreneurs, CEOs and businesswomen.

Over 70% of Good Work Foundation’s Bridging Academy students are women who come from traditionally patriarchal communities and so we were thrilled when Pauline Chiquet (Go Against the Flow Marketing Manager) reached out to us, suggesting we share the documentary with our students.

But we wanted to go one step further. We wanted a successful South African businesswoman and entrepreneur to watch the documentary with our students and discuss her story with our students as well.

Nonkululeko Nyembezi started Maru Marketing and Promotions with just R4000 ($300). Like many of the Go Against the Flow women, Nonkululeko worked a number of jobs before and some were important positions in big companies.

Nonkululeko had her epiphany when she was fired from her job faster than she could comprehend what had happened.

“I had to ask myself some important questions and needed answers to them urgently. Was I willing to go through another 10 years working hard and making chunks of money for another company that could also fire me at a click of a finger, or was I now ready to take a huge risk and use my brains to start my own business and run it the way I saw fit?” said Nonkululeko.

GWF Student Support Coordinator, Mercyful Mathebula (who herself was the first person and woman in her family to graduate from University), was most pleased to have Nonkululeko speak to her students.

“We are on a mission to expose more rural women to the possibility of building their own companies, by giving them access to inspiring, successful and fearless women,” said Mercyful, “and Go Against the Flow has been powerful.”

GWF looks forward to continue meeting and working with young women who have the chutzpah to live in a new century with new rules. There’s no going back.

Thank you to the women who have inspired our students who feel they are now "ready to take the entrepreneur world on."
