Women On The Rise: Lungile Shabangu

Upon arrival at the Hazyview Digital Learning Campus (HDLC) in 2012, Lungile Shabangu enrolled to study International Computer Driver’s Licence (ICDL) advanced modules as she had previously studied ICDL core at another institution.

The only information she knew about the HDLC was that it was a “Computer Learning Campus” nothing else! She was never struck by the thought of ever becoming an ICDL facilitator, particularly at this campus.

“During an interview, I divulged that I had qualified with an ICDL certificate. Gay Sibuyi, an ICDL Coordinator at that time, suggested that I’d better be assessed to see whether or not I could facilitate ICDL. When Gay learnt that I qualified, she immediately asked me to join her department, helping students with IT literacy,” says Lungile.

For Lungile, “teaching” comes naturally as she always engages with her students, making sure that they understand the lessons. Respect is also a value with which Lungile treats whoever she comes across.

Those core values played a huge role in Lungile’s promotion to the Group Coordinator for ICDL. Lungile replaces Gay Sibuyi, who has been appointed as Head of Hazyview Campus.

“I was really shocked by this appointment, but as nervous as I am; I know that I will deliver on my responsibilities. Obviously I will not cease seeking guidance from Gay who has been both my mentor and role model,” added Lungile.

Irrespective of who you are or what your background is, when your dream overlaps with the mission and vision of GWF, success is bound to transpire. Lungile is one example of that success.

“I will not cease seeking guidance from sis Gay to ensure the smooth running of the ICDL department”, says Lungile.
