Young People Making a Difference

It is very hard not to be affected if you are in the presence of people like Busi Mkhumbuzi, a 20-year-old with a natural energy that spreads within seconds. When I walked into the room, she had earphones in her ears and eyes pinned to a Philosophy and Politics textbook that she was reading. I got my first impression: education-centered and social.

Her speech is bold, her body posture so confident and her smile so sure of what she is doing and the impact it has on the Open learning Academy youth of the rural Madlala High School. Busi’s theatre and dramatic art talents were discovered when she was just 16. She put up a startling performance through a monologue that she performed in the Vigina Monologues competition that took place in Johannesburg.

Busi is currently busy with the groundwork to get high school pupils from five different schools in the Mpumalanga, Western Cape and Gauteng provinces to communicate social problems via theatre and drama.

Through her degree, Busi hopes to gain a better understanding of what it really means to be a social entrepreneur which will allow her “to make a real and lasting impact on every community” she reaches out to.

“The Madlala students look forward to Busi’s visits all the time. We are so excited that she is working on a project that will give the students an opportunity to feed off of her positive energy”, says the Coordinator of the Madlala Digital Learning Centre, Lonky Nkuna.
