Career Academies

Good Work Foundation currently runs four career-focused adult learning academies on its Hazyview Digital Learning Campus: the IT Academy, the Hospitality Academy, the Conservation Academy and the Facilitator Academy.

Our Bridging Year Academy graduates are often recruited into these advanced academies, which are linked to industries in the Greater Kruger National Park area.

Core programme attributes

By focusing on students' particular interests, Good Work Foundation's career training academies aim to grow these young people into highly employable graduates in industries specific to the areas in which GWF operates.

The academies aim to connect students with meaningful employment opportunities in travel and tourism (in particular, hospitality and conservation), IT and facilitation, or employment in our own business process outsourcing (BPO) centre on campus.

About our academies

  • Conservation Academy
This year-long programme prepares students for working in conservation as Level 1 field guides, accredited by the Field Guides Association of South Africa (FGASA). The programme has robust theoretical and practical components. Being a guide is a sought-after career in this area, the heart of South Africa’s wildlife and eco-tourism industries.
  • Hospitality Academy
This year-long programme is run in partnership with the South African College of Tourism and focuses on table service, housekeeping, barista and general hospitality skills. Graduates of this academy leave ready to take up positions in lodges, restaurants and hotels.
  • IT Academy
With South Africa having firmly embraced the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the demand for IT professionals keeps increasing year after year. Our IT Academy taps into the growing need for these digital skills. The IT Academy offers a one-year further education and training certificate in technical support, enabling students to become CompTIA secure infrastructure analysts and Level 1 IT support engineers.
  • Facilitator Academy
The Facilitator Academy trains facilitators to work within the education space. Students develop facilitation skills that are applicable to both children and adults in the teaching and learning process. The academy is guided by core modules, focusing on building a positive culture of learning, creating stimulating learning environments, and shifting the paradigms of traditional teaching and learning. The ultimate aim is to equip facilitators to increase each learner’s independence and confidence in their own abilities, making them active participants in the learning process.

My goal is to equip people from the community with necessary skills for jobs in conservation.

For the past three years, I have used different facilitation methods, which have seen my students achieve a 100% pass rate. Most of the conservation graduates now work in surrounding game reserves.
