GWF leadership series: spotlight on Fortune Mathebula

This month, we are shining the spotlight on some of the GWF leaders making an impact in their communities. We are so proud of these GWF staff and alumni, who are displaying leadership in different but equally profound ways. We hope you enjoy reading their stories as much as we've enjoyed being part of their journeys.

Fortune Mathebula, Madlala High School educator from Justicia village

Fortune's journey has taken him from being enriched by GWF's facilitators as a child to being inspired to enter the world of teaching himself. This is his story:

"My relationship with GWF began at the age of 14, when I was enrolled as a learner, and it was grounded in the digital tree of knowledge. GWF became more than just a foundation to me. It became a place where I was equipped with valuable computer skills and, more importantly, it was where I was nurtured to express myself fluently and confidently in English.

"GWF also played an important role in my tertiary education, supporting me as I pursued my dreams and aspirations as a young village boy. Through this relationship, I have learned that when someone invests in your life, you have a responsibility to invest in others.

"That is why giving back to my community has become an important part of who I am. Today, I strive to be a transformational leader who inspires others to achieve more than they could have imagined, while creating a shared sense of purpose.

"My leadership is grounded in honesty, integrity and self-awareness. I believe in leading authentically, staying true to my values and using my journey to inspire others. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to believe in you, give you an opportunity and remind you that your dreams are possible. I am a product of that belief, and today, I am committed to becoming that person for someone else."
